A Jessner’s Peel is considered a medium-strength peel and can treat a variety of skin concerns. This peel can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring and hyperpigmentation, and sun damage including age spots. It is an effective treatment for acne and will exfoliate skin while reducing oil production and clearing clogged pores.  A Jessner’s Peel is sometimes applied before other peels like a TCA peel to treat acne scarring and increase penetration of the TCA.

Jessner’s Peel Ingredients

This peel contains three effective ingredients: lactic acid, salicylic acid, and citric acid. Together these ingredients exfoliate the skin to remove imperfections. Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that diminishes cohesion of the surface skin cells to exfoliate the skin. Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid that also exfoliates while reducing oiliness and acne. It is a frequently used ingredient in acne treatments as it can reduce blackheads and whiteheads and has anti-inflammatory properties. Citric acid exfoliates to help promote new skin growth.

Skin Type

A Jessner’s Peel is usually recommended for Fitzpatrick skin types I-III and not for darker skin tones. For patients with Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI we offer a wide range of customized formulations with ingredients and strengths that will be less likely to cause hyperpigmentation. For all patients proper aftercare is recommended including regular use of broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Jessner’s Modified Solution

Our peel has been modified from the original Jessner’s formulation that included resorcinol. Resorcinol has become less available from reputable suppliers, possibly due to decreased demand and concerns over its safety. Our formulation replaces resorcinol with citric acid, which is also effective as a chemical peel ingredient.
