10% Nasal Spray
Acetylcysteine is a powerful antioxidant with a variety of applications. It is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines and is commonly used for acetaminophen overdose, as a mucolytic, and for treating Contrast-Induced Neuropathy. Recently it has been used to replenish glutathione, which is an essential antioxidant that declines with the onset of neurodegenerative diseases. Acetylcysteine can be made into either a nasal spray or oral solution by our compounding pharmacy.
Acetylcysteine Nasal Spray
For treating infections of the sinus passages, acetylcysteine acts as a mucolytic (medicine that destroys or dissolves mucus). It is used for certain sinus conditions when increased amounts of mucus make breathing difficult. The medication liquefies (thins) or dissolves mucus so that it can drain from the sinus area. Acetylcysteine for treating sinusitis can be made into either a nasal spray or an atomized solution. A compact electronic atomizer releases the liquid medication into a mist that gets inhaled into the sinus and nasal cavity regions.
Acetylcysteine Oral Solution
Acetylcysteine is used in hospitals for treating Contrast-Induced Neuropathy (CIN), which can occur in patients after they receive radio-opaque contrast media. CIN accounts for a large number of hospital-acquired acute kidney injuries. Acetylcysteine is generally well-tolerated and is most often used in combination with standard hydration for CIN. In an oral solution it is also used in hospitals to treat acetaminophen overdose.
Availability of Acetylcysteine Oral
Currently, acetylcysteine oral is on shortage due to manufacturing delays but is still available from a compounding pharmacy. The current shortages are for the 200mg/mL size in 4mL and 30mL concentrations.
