Estrogen and progesterone are essential hormones that are used for hormone replacement therapy to treat menopause symptoms. Progesterone on its own is sometimes used to help prevent complications during pregnancy. Luteal phase defect occurs when there is an inadequate secretion of progesterone during the menstrual cycle, which causes the uterine lining to develop improperly. When this happens it can lead to infertility or early miscarriage. This happens because the egg is not able to implant in the endometrium or is unable to adhere to the uterine lining due to low progesterone levels.

Progesterone levels are usually checked as a part of an initial prenatal screening, and, if the patient’s levels are low, the physician may prescribe suppositories during the first trimester to build up the uterine lining. The suppositories are used daily and may increase the chances of having a successful pregnancy.

In-Vitro Fertilization and Progesterone Suppositories

These suppositories may also be used with patients undergoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or other treatments for infertility. Sometimes progesterone-producing cells are reduced because of drugs given during IVF and supplements may be used.
