Chloroquine 250mg Capsules
Chloroquine is a medication first developed as an anti-malarial that has been used for many years to help treat lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus, or SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis. If a patient responds to treatment with an anti-malarial, in general it will continue to be used indefinitely.
Chloroquine reduces inflammation and helps control skin rash in people who have lupus. It may also may help relieve muscle and joint pain, fatigue, and fever that are not controlled with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is thought that chloroquine is effective because it inhibits thiamine production, which slows the over-production of immune cells that cause lupus.
Although there are possible side effects from anti-malarials, in general they have a good safety record. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal upset and skin rashes.
