Ketotifen Capsules 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg
Ketotifen is an antiallergic drug used for treating a variety of conditions including:
- allergic rhinitis
- allergic conjunctivitis
- atopic dermatitis
- chronic urticaria
- cold-induced urticaria
- cholinergic urticaria
- exercise-induced urticaria
- mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS)
- food allergy
Ketotifen is used in Canada, Europe, and Mexico to treat asthma and urticaria but is only commercially available in the U.S. for ophthalmic use. However the oral form of the drug continues to be prescribed in the U.S. and is obtained through compounding pharmacies due to strong evidence supporting its safety and efficacy. In multiple studies oral ketotifen has been shown to be safe, effective, and superior to other antihistamines.
Oral ketotifen has been most widely used for treating asthma and allergies but other applications continue to be researched. It can prevent symptoms of food allergies when taken regularly and recently was shown to reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. It may also help with immunological conditions like mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) and mastocytosis.
For adults and older children with asthma or allergic disease, the most commonly recommended dose is 1 mg twice daily. For young children 6 months to 3 years old it is 0.5 mg twice daily.
