Promethazine transdermal gel (aka Phenergan Gel) is used to treat nausea and vomiting. The only commercially available forms in the U.S. are tablets and suppositories, although it is available as a cream in other countries. Since oral tablets or suppositories are not always desirable for treating nausea, a transdermal gel may be custom-made by a compounding pharmacy.

Promethazine Uses

Promethazine has a variety of applications and has been used as an antiallergic, a sedative, and to treat motion sickness. For most of these applications, it is taken orally in a tablet. It has been sold in combination with other drugs under many brand names since it was first developed in the 1940s. The most commonly known brand name for promethazine in the United States is likely Phenergan, which is sold in tablets and suppositories.

Promethazine Gel Application

Promethazine transdermal gel should be applied to the wrist every 4-6 hours as needed for nausea and vomiting. It is important that proper precautions be taken to avoid sun exposure when using this medication as it may make the skin more sensitive.
