Why is this Hand Sanitizer a Solution and not a Gel?
Compounding pharmacies have been given very strict guidelines as to the formulations they can use to make hand sanitizer. The FDA guidance specifically states that it must be made in the form of an aqueous solution and not a gel (like Purell). This is what the FDA has told us:
“This policy [of allowing compounding of hand sanitizer] does not apply to hand sanitizer gel or foam products because different or additional ingredients may impact the quality and potency of the product.”
In addition, this is the exact formulation we must follow according to the FDA: “The hand sanitizer is compounded according to the following formula consistent with World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations:
17 a. Alcohol (ethanol) (formulated to 80%, volume/volume (v/v)) in an aqueous solution; or Isopropyl Alcohol (formulated to 75%, v/v) in an aqueous solution.
18, 19 b.Glycerin (glycerol) (1.45% v/v).20 c.Hydrogen peroxide (0.125% v/v).21 d.Sterile distilled water or boiled cold water.”
If we could make a gel we would, as many customers would prefer this – but we are limited by the FDA regulation. The manufacturing process to make this in a gel without having separation is actually very complex. In addition, as you can see, this is not just alcohol – we compound it using isopropyl alcohol, glycerin, and hydrogen peroxide in very specific amounts. We make this in a clean environment at our accredited pharmacy and with careful measurements, as the concentration is essential to make the sanitizer effective.
