Product Spotlight: TAC 20 Gel

Product Spotlight: TAC 20 Gel

One of our popular compounds at Park Compounding Pharmacy is our TAC 20. However, the name TAC 20 is not an accurate acronym for this dental anesthesia. The “TAC” used to stand for tetracaine, epinephrine (adrenaline), and cocaine and the product was used mostly in emergency rooms. Since the product no longer contains those exact ingredients we often call it TAC 20% alternate. Now, our specially compounded prescription TAC 20 gel contains lidocaine 20%, tetracaine 4%, and phenylephrine 2% and it is mainly used by dentists, orthodontists, and periodontists. TAC 20 gel is a topical anesthetic used for many dental procedures and is often used for pre-injection numbing.

What’s in TAC 20 Gel?

Lidocaine is the ingredient with the highest concentration in our TAC 20 gel. This is the anesthesia that does most of the compound medication’s work. Lidocaine is the most frequently used anesthesia in dentistry. It blocks the pain signals that would be sent from nerve fibers when a dentist is performing a procedure. Our TAC 20 gel at Park Compounding Pharmacy contains 20% lidocaine but we are able to specially formulate any combination based on a patient’s needs. The other ingredients are tetracaine 4% and phenylephrine 2%. Tetracaine is another anesthetic that blocks nerve signals like lidocaine and phenylephrine is a vasoconstrictor.

At Park Compounding Pharmacy we give dentists and other dental practitioners what they need to make visits safer and more comfortable for their patients. Some patients visiting a dentist’s office may have unique reactions to certain medications or methods of administration. That’s where our compounding pharmacy comes in to provide the doctor with the medication they need to best treat their patient. We compound TAC 20 gel at our pharmacy in five different flavors including bubblegum and mint. This helps make a patient’s experience at the dentist, orthodontist, or periodontist as easy and comfortable as possible.

Can anyone buy the TAC 20? What’s the cost And quantity? Most numbing anesthetic and creams I have used don’t work well for tattooing large areas or very sensitive areas. So I have been looking for something stronger.

TAC 20 is a made for use only in the mouth. For the skin, we recommend BLT cream. BLT cream is a powerful topical anesthetic formulation with three ingredients. Both TAC 20 and BLT cream require a prescription. Are you looking for a numbing cream for your own use or are you a tattoo artist?

I am hygienist in Texas and I use TAC 20 on nearly every single scaling and root planning patient. The anesthesia is so profound we rarely have to use local anesthetic during the procedure. Patients love not having their entire mouth numb for hours following the procedure.

We are not able to sell directly to tattoo artists. BLT cream must be prescribed by a healthcare provider like a medication. A patient may be able to get a higher-strength numbing cream with a prescription from their healthcare provider.

What other ingredients do you mean? We make a formulation we refer to as BLT cream that includes benzocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine.
